Outdoor workers who are exposed to hot and humid conditions are at risk of heat-related illness. The risk of heat-related illness becomes greater as the weather gets hotter and more humid. This situation is particularly serious when hot weather arrives suddenly early in the season, before workers have had a chance to adapt to warm weather.

For people working outdoors in hot weather, both air temperature and humidity affect how hot they feel. The "heat index" is a single value that takes both temperature and humidity into account. The higher the heat index, the hotter the weather feels, since sweat does not readily evaporate and cool the skin. The heat index is a better measure than air temperature alone for estimating the risk to workers from environmental heat sources.

The dew point represents the temperature at which air must be cooled (at constant pressure) to achieve a relative humidity of 100%, reaching the saturation point where the air can no longer hold water in gas form. Further cooling would cause water vapor to condense into liquid, often forming fog or precipitation. As the dew point increases, the amount of moisture in the air rises, directly impacting the perceived comfort level outdoors. Relative humidity can sometimes be deceptive. For instance, when the temperature is 30 degrees and the dew point is 30, the relative humidity is 100%, but when the temperature is 80 degrees and the dew point is 60, the relative humidity is 50%. Despite the lower relative humidity, the 80-degree day with a dew point of 60 would feel much more "humid" compared to the 30-degree day with 100% relative humidity due to the higher dew point. To gauge the actual "dryness" or "humidity" outside accurately, it's best to consider the dew point rather than the relative humidity. The higher the dew point, the more muggy the weather will feel.
